winter-blues

If losing weight or building muscle is your New Year’s resolution, maintaining or beginning an exercise program when it’s just too cold to go outside can be a major motivation crusher. We are all familiar with the coziness of a warm bed in the morning and know that forcing ourselves to get out bed can sometimes be the greatest challenge of the day. Fortunately, if fitness is on your mind this winter, there are ways to combat avolition and promote drive!

If it’s the cold that is the biggest drag on your motivation to get moving outdoors, bring the gym into your living room! There are a whole host of workouts that can be done from the comfort of your home that are just as effective as going to the gym. Finding workouts to do are easy enough, as well, by just searching the internet for effective at-home workouts or following online fitness blogs.

In general, one of the most difficult parts of maintaining a workout schedule is finding time, so prioritize your fitness by planning to work out in the morning. As the day goes on and responsibilities pile up, it becomes harder to fit extraneous tasks into your schedule, so get your workout in early and you won’t have to think about it.

One of the most important aspects of a healthy lifestyle is to make sure that you can always keep moving. In the morning, plan to walk around the block to get your body going before work. If you have a sedentary desk position, take a walk during your lunch break, and resume your walk post-work before getting home.

If all else fails and you find a day that is difficult to incorporate a workout, make sure to keep your nutrition in focus by drinking lots of water and not eating too late at night. Those two items will help speed up your metabolism, as should focusing on small portions throughout the day.

The biggest thing to remember is to find what motivates you. With those tricks in your pocket, you should find yourself well on your way to maintaining or building your exercise regime despite the cold!
